The Uttoxeter Road, Main Street, Derby Road route through the village is blighted with too much traffic, intermittent speeding, poor driving practices, and noise. This creates a daily nuisance for the residents living there. A number of attempts have been made in the past to improve this situation.

The 2024 Traffic Survey commissioned by Hilton Parish Council, and carried out by Derbyshire County Council confirmed previous findings hat 3 time as much traffic used the Main Street route vs The Mease. The survey detail is HERE, together with a presentation summary.

On 27 August 2025, the Parish Council called a public meeting with a representative from Derbyshire County Council Highways department. The meeting was well attended by local residents.

A number of initiatives were discussed and taken away for further study. These have been grouped and assigned a DCC reference number (see below). A single person in DCC has been nominated to address each issue recognising the priorities. Whilst DCC might have funding issues, the Parish Council funding the priority projects to ensure that progress was made.

A previous initiative which will be installed shortly is 2 Speed Indicator Devices along this stretch of road. 1 on Derby Road, checking speed of cars opposite the Nursery, and 1 on Main Street near to Dale End Road - both in the village bound direction. 2 further ones will be on Sutton Lane and on The Mease near the school.

In parallel with this we are having regular direct contact with the Traffic Management team at Balfour Beatty to improve the road signs deployed when there are diversions off the A50 with the intention of directing traffic round The Mease. This is beginning to make a difference.

Main Priorities

1. Main Street Chicane : potentially in 2 phases. Phase 1 - temporary, low cost, trial installation, followed by a permanent change. A consequence of this could be the removal of the speed bumps and replacing with chicanes.- 750013651

3. Extend 20mph School safety zone : currently just around Egginton Road/Peacroft Lane - extend up Derby Road to include nearest zebra crossing and part way down Main Street. 750017291

5. Emergency diversion Flip signs : to facilitate more convenient deployment with unplanned diversions off the A50. 750022714

6. Repositioning/visibility of 30mph terminal signs at Derby Road junction with A5132, can DCC revisit and check appropriateness of signing, perhaps move one to the central splitter to make more visible? 750027024

7. Main Street One-Way: a suggestion was made for the Main Street to be made one-way with narrowings and sheltered arrangements with the parking to keep speeds low. 750029034

8. The Mease: residential concerns with speeds of traffic between the roundabouts. 750029900

9. Main Street Narrow Footways: concerns about narrow footways on Main Street puts residents near vehicles and HGV's. 750031318
