Hilton Level Crossing Safety and Awareness

In August 2022 it will be ten years since a member of railway staff was struck by a road vehicle whilst on duty at Hilton Level Crossing which inflicted life changing injuries to him. Since that day there have been several safety improvements at this location to stop the same thing happening to anyone else. These include the provision of full orange PPE to our staff to make them more visible to motorists, improved advance warning signage provided at the crossing and the provision of red flashing road lights from May 2020.

Sadly, we are still seeing regular, dangerous behaviour at this crossing. When the Crossing Keeper opens the gates following the passage of a train some motorists continue to ignore the red lights and drive across the crossing whilst our member of staff is in the roadway and still opening the gates.

We're worried that it's only a matter of time before someone else is injured – or worse.

This is a direct request to all motorists who use Hilton Level Crossing. When the train has passed and the Crossing Keeper is opening the gates, please abide by the laws of the road and wait at the stop line until the red lights turn off. We do know that waiting can be frustrating, and the gates are opened as quickly as possible to get you on your way. Please work with us to prevent another accident.
